Review: Ernest Shand’s Collected Guitar Works (ed. Stanley Yates)

Ernest Shand (1868–1924), guitarist and music-hall entertainer.

Last summer I was asked to review Stanley Yates’s Ernest Shand: Guitar Music from Late Victorian England (Collected Works) for Soundboard Scholar, the peer-reviewed journal of the Guitar Foundation of America. Many happy hours were spent reading and playing through the contents of the edition, and I am pleased to say that the review has now been digitally published. You can read my review and its accompanying list of errata here, and order a copy of Yates’s edition here. Ernest Shand (1868–1924) is a unique and much-overlooked figure in British guitar history; my thanks go to Stanley for bringing his life and music to wider audiences.
